Loving your Lawn Year Round
SPRING
GENERAL YARD CARE
Remove the debris, leaves, and toys before you mow. Get rid of winter weeds (typically a sign of poor
drainage or the need for aerification) aerate if necessary. Fill in low spots.
MOWING
Cut lower than normal to help remove excess leaves, grass, and permit heat and light in. Never
remove more than 1/3 of the grass leaf height per mowing.
FERTILIZING
(Late spring) 3-4 weeks after your lawn has first "greened" up is the first time to fertilize. The lawn
needs to exhaust its fall and winter nitrates before you begin feeding it.
WEED CONTROL
Apply pre-emergent late April to early May. Do not apply after the Lilacs are blooming or more than
two weeks after the Forsythia blooms.
WATERING
Water about 1 inch every week. Consider automatic irrigation system to conserve and apply water precisely. Avoid over-watering.
SUMMER
GENERAL YARD CARE
Avoid leaving children's pools, water slides or other large items on your lawn for more than a day.
MOWING
Cut at the late spring to fall height to increase root growth, increase water retention and increase heat tolerance. Each time you mow, cut in a
different direction for stronger, healthier grass.
FERTILIZING
Late summer is the second most important feeding next to fall.
WEED CONTROL
Apply premium fertilizer with Trimec. Trimec is a proven and effective broadleaf weed control for Minnesota
weeds.
WATERING
Water about 1 - 2 inches every week, depending on heat and wind. Avoid over-watering. Clay soils, water 1 inch
every week very slowly to soak in. Sandy soils, water 1/2 inch 3 times a week.
FALL
GENERAL YARD CARE
The best season for reseeding, or seeding and sodding. Remove all leaves and other debris before it snows.
MOWING
Maintain late spring to fall height to protect against winter damage. Remove leaves and other matting
materials.
FERTILIZING
Fall is the most important time to feed your lawn to prepare the lawn for winter and feed for Spring green
up.
WEED CONTROL
You can apply weed control as long as the weeds are growing!
WATERING
Water about 1 inch a week until the soil freezes to reduce winter damage.
HELPING CLAY & SANDY SOIL
Clay soils
1. aerate every 1-2 years depending on use and compaction
2. Top dress after with gypsum. 50lbs. per 1,000 square feet
3. Use a 50/50 mix of gypsum and sand every other application
Sandy Soils
1. Mulch your grass clippings
2. Use a slow release fertilizer with multiple sources of organic nitrogen
MULCHING GRASS CLIPPINGS SAVES FERTILIZER AND HELPS COOL THE LAWN
Mulched grass can provide up to 20% of your fertilizer needs. Mulching is best on the late spring to fall cut height.
Taller grass helps cool the lawn and promotes deeper, stronger root growth.
